Baking Soda for Seniors: Simple Daily Habits That May Support Better Health and Comfort

articleUseronApril 24, 2026

Step-by-step guide:

Choose a good quality, pure baking soda (Arm & Hammer or any food-grade sodium bicarbonate works well).
In the morning, dissolve ¼ teaspoon of baking soda in a full glass of warm water (about 8–10 ounces).
Stir until completely dissolved and drink it slowly on an empty stomach.
Wait at least 30 minutes before eating breakfast.
Some people also try a smaller amount in the evening, but morning use tends to be the most common.
Remember: never exceed ½ teaspoon per day without speaking with your doctor first. More is not better when it comes to baking soda.

Important Safety Tips Before You Start
Before adding any new habit, it’s wise to understand a few key points:

People with high blood pressure, heart conditions, or kidney issues should check with their healthcare provider first because baking soda contains sodium.

If you are taking any prescription medications, especially for blood pressure or diuretics, get medical advice before starting.
Stop immediately if you notice any unusual symptoms and consult your doctor.
This is not medical advice — it is simply information many older adults are exploring on their own.

What Science Says About Sodium Bicarbonate
Several studies have looked at how sodium bicarbonate affects the body. Research published in medical journals has explored its role in supporting exercise performance, buffering lactic acid, and helping with occasional muscle fatigue. Some small studies also suggest potential benefits for kidney health markers in certain populations, though more research is still needed.

A 2018 review in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology discussed how oral sodium bicarbonate supplementation may help slow certain age-related changes in kidney function for some individuals. Other research has focused on its alkalizing effects and how that might influence overall comfort and energy levels.
