The boys looked sleepy but content, clutching the little gift bags Julian had bought them earlier.
“Mommy,” Liam asked softly as we waited for the car, “is Daddy going to be okay?”
“Daddy chose his path, sweetheart,” I said gently. “But you don’t need to worry about him. We have our own path now.”
Julian looked at me under the warm lights of the hotel entrance.
“You were incredible, Elena. Truthfully, you didn’t even need me.”
“Maybe not,” I said with a smile. “But you definitely made it more entertaining.”
A few months later, everything had changed.
Mark was struggling to find work. News of his firing—and the reason for it—spread through the industry like wildfire. Tiffany left him not long after the wedding when she realized the glamorous lifestyle she had married into was built on lies and debt.
As for me, with Julian’s help and my own rebuilt portfolio, I launched my own marketing firm.
I called it Emerald Rise.
Within a year, it became one of the most successful agencies in the city.
One evening, Julian came by for dinner. The boys were playing in the backyard while we sat on the porch with glasses of wine.
“You know,” Julian said, looking at me, “I didn’t just go to that wedding to help an old friend.”
“I know,” I whispered.
He reached over and took my hand.
“I’ve waited ten years for Mark to get out of the way. I’m not going anywhere this time.”
I looked at my sons laughing in the yard, then back at the man who had seen my worth when I was at my lowest.
The betrayal, the cheating, the divorce, the humiliation—it was all just shadow now.
