I grabbed my phone, trying to think clearly, but my mind was racing. What if something happened to him? What if I went too far?
I dialed the number of the only person I could trust—Emma. She picked up on the first ring.
“Hello?” she asked, her voice still thick with laughter from the bar.
“It’s bad,” I said, my voice shaky. “I think I made a huge mistake.”
The rest of the night was a blur of confusion and panic. By the time the paramedics arrived, Steve had passed out from the pain, his body betraying him in ways I never thought possible. As they loaded him into the ambulance, I stood there, a helpless spectator to my own actions.
And as I watched the lights of the ambulance fade into the distance, I realized that the game I had started was far from over. In fact, it was only just beginning.
