“That’s not true,” she said quickly. Too quickly. “I don’t know her.”
But her voice betrayed her.

Daniel turned toward her slowly.
“You told me she was gone,” he said.
His voice was quiet.

Victoria didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.

The girl stepped forward again, her small voice cutting through the tension.
“She wasn’t gone,” she said. “She just couldn’t stay.”
